I have a 69 satellite 318/904 all stock car and engine have 25000 miles on them. It has 8 3/4 with 2.76 rear open gear. So far it has a edelbrock performer intake and 650 carb. I was thinking of a cam upgrade when I pull engine for under hood paint. I want something with a little more torque not looking for a race car engine just something reliable and easy to tune. Would like to keep rar gear and factory convertor. Only reaon for change is because sometimes I get a little lifter noise and then it goes away, maybe a lifter starting to go bad so I figure while I got it out I would put a small cam and lifters.

Keep in mind, cam is only one piece to the puzzle. I put a Comp 268 in my teen, and it was an absolute dog off the line, it didn't come around until 3000 or so RPM's.. A good converter and rear gears are almost imperative if you want any spunk at all, gears at the very least.

just keep the duration lo...204 give or take with around .420 - 430 lift.
a 3.23 gear will wake it up and shouldn't hurt mileage

Run a stock 340 cam or the MP .430/.450" lift cam....

I pulled 22.5" Hg with a stock 340 cam, Rhoades lifters and a 4bbl on a 318 with 2.76 gears and got 17.75 MPG on the highway.

If you keep the cam spec's reasonable, you won't need a stall....

Do you want to use the stock springs or are you willing to change them out?

I have had good results with the both the Summit Racing 6900 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-6900

and the Summit Racing 6901

Both using stock springs in 318's and both running 2.7 rear gears and stock converters with 904s. They recommend you change springs though. Neither are tire scorchers with the highway gears out of the hole, but they drive around nice and really helped the engines pull through to 5000+rpm where the stock cams fell off before 4500 rpm. The 6900 would probably be better with stock exhaust manifolds than the 6901.

Since you have a Heavier B body I would use the 6900. Stock springs are fine if you don't plan on revving to redline. Crane grinds these cam and they are good quality. For $60 bucks you can buy a set of new springs. Comp 901-16

Stock springs are OK with a lower lift and duration cam. Buy new stock ones for a few $$ each or at least have the present ones checked to get rid of any weak ones. That type of cam will keep the rev's low and the springs will work OK.

I would want the cams that are specifically for good low end torque for an engine like you have: Lunati has the 10200207, Crane has the H248-2, and Crower has the 31915 Baja Beast and 31917 Torque Beast.

Whatever you do>>>>> GET a new timing chain with a way to advance the cam 4 degrees or so. Mancini has reasonably priced ones. Some cams come with ground in advance, so if you are not sure, after you pick one, come back and we can tell you if it has ground-in advance or not. Cam advance will further help low end torque and help compensate a lower compression ratio to some degree.

The Comp 265 DEH would work very well.
