OK, so I'm out visiting my brother near Seattle, and we're in the process of assembling his 340 and degreeing his Lunati voodoo solid cam. Adv 264/272, 235/243@ 050, 525/546", 106ICL recommended install.

We ran through the cycles about four times now, and we came up with 117* ICL! Measured 050 numbers on either side of the lobe were either

153/83, or 152/82 depending on how I held my tongue...we also eyeballed the timing wheel when the dial indicator maxed out and, it definitely looked as though ICL was about 117. This is clearly pretty retarded, and we only have a 3 keyway timing set.

We're going to go ahead and swap it to the 4* advance slot and see what we come up with, but would you guys think it to be OK to run it as much as 7* retarded in a 10.4:1 340 with Edelbrock heads? Or should we be looking into a new timing set?

This is a freshly machined engine with new OOTB heads going in a '72 Scamp with a 2500 stall and 373 gears...street going car...

Any help greatly appreciated...

I would shoot for around 104* mr gasket sells 2 and 4* keyways if the 4* is not enough. Sometimes you luck out and they are rite on. More often than not I have to tweek mine. 7* retarded and you would be looking at an extremely doggy 340. for what ever reason on my stroker was 116* straight up, 109* 4* advanced so i threw in a 2* keyway and got it dialed in @ 107* my cam has a 110 ICL wanted to be 108* but 107* is close enough for me

Maybe advance it one tooth and use the 4 degree retarded slot.

That is why I prefer the 9 key way timing sets.
You can get them a little closer than the 3 key way ones.

Maybe advance it one tooth and use the 4 degree retarded slot.

Thanks Jim-I think we came to the same conclusion about the same time you did...as it turns out, we got it squared away with one tooth advanced and 0* on the crank gear. That put it to 107* ICL, and I can live with 1* retarded...I think whoever operates the machine which puts the divot in the cam gear must've been having an off day...

It'll see paint tomorrow...
