How hard is it to find a 8 1/4 suregrip and what autos have them?

You can find them in 96 and older Dodge trucks with the 8 1/4 dif (RAM and Dakotas). Just make sure they are 27 spline. Have you checked out Randy's Ring and Pinion? Got a suregrip, 3.55 gear, and a rebuild kit from them a few years back and loved how my diff turned out. Check out this link: http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffWizard.aspx

You can get a new Spicer Trac Loc from Rock Auto for less than $350. Unless you have 2.45 gears you can put it in your rear and go with the gears you have. If you need the whole axle look for '73-'76 A bodies (Dart, Valiant, Duster, Dart Sport). That is the only direct bolt in and they are not as plentiful as they once were....

That's what i did on mine too. 150 bucks for a slightly used trac loc from a shop that does a lot of rear ends. Works great.

You've got to be careful about the axle you plan to install the suregrip in. If the original axle ratio is 2:45, (many A bodies were), no other ratios will fit as the housing is unique.

My 8 1/4 came from a 74 Dart and had a 2:45 gear and I had no problem installing a new suregrip with 3:55 gear in it.

still looking for one should be one in a yard around here somewhere

I bought mine here in texas brand new 200 bucks from a guy who bought a bunch of shelf stock from a dodge dealer that closed he still has some
