People frequently complain about the police, but you rarely hear about the positive things they do, such as this incident involving a biker and a frozen carburetor.

Last January on a bitterly cold winter's day, a North Dakota State Trooper on patrol came upon a motorcyclist who was stalled by the roadside.

The biker was swathed in heavy protective clothing and wearing a full-face helmet to protect the face from the cold weather.

"What's the matter? asked the Trooper “

“Carburetor's frozen," was the terse reply.

"Pee on it. That'll thaw it out.”

"I can't," said the biker. “

“OK, watch me closely and I'll show you.”

The Trooper unzipped and promptly warmed the carburetor as promised.

Moments later the bike started and the rider drove off, waving.

A few days later, the local State Troopers' office received a note of thanks from the father of the motorcyclist.

It began: "On behalf of my daughter Janice...

I don't even want to think about how cold it would have to be to freeze a carb 2" from a heat radiating cylinder

I’ve had it happen with a Thermoquad, and it was above freezing temperature outside.

Apparently the fuel had a good bit of water in it and after idling for about 10 minutes to warm up, the fuel froze inside the carburetor. Intake was warm to the touch and the carb had frozen.

You be surprized. I can remember back in the '70's when I was at NAS Miramar, someone had a VW tube frame dune buggy had an aftermarket tube intake and larger carb 2bbl I think. It was a typical hot San Diego day. It would FROST UP under the carb on the tube manifold

Girl I used to know had a Chev pickup with a Clifford 4bbl and headers. Damn thing was nearly undriveable until I got her to make a home made "snorkel heat" stove for the air filter and get a coolant heated carb spacer

This can happen on high humidity clear up into "comfortable" weather. It doesn't have to be very cold

The classes that had to run stock VW stuff in the desert racers had that issue too. If you cut the factory heat riser off it was gonna happen come winter. VW built in a little damper that could be open or close with couple 10mm wrenches. No that weighs too much, cut it off.
