True story..........Way back in the early 1990's we were on our way back from Yuma going to Sandy Eggo driving a car that my friend just bought out of the Auto trader. It was summer time so goes with out saying it was hot. The car had been sitting for 10+ years and was parked because it just stopped running one day. Before roadkill and all these youtube super stars doing this for cameras. We were buying cars and making it run for a road trip back in High school. Well we got a ride out to Yuma with tools and were dropped off. Lucky for us the auto parts store "Chief auto" was 200 yards away. The car was moved into a car port so the oven heat of the Satan desert would not cook us too much. After looking at it for all of 10 minutes we bought the car, the first thing we do was replace battery, points, coil, and ballast resistor. Car started after about a minute of cranking. A quick check before we left, brakes were some what working-ish but the ebrake works so we could stop. Power steering was filled and boom worked bitchen. The headlights worked and was charging. Filled coolant no leaks. The engine leaked oil and when first started it smoked like we were fogging for mosquito's but then cleared out. We filled the tires, they were cracked but held air and off we went. Stopped at the auto parts store bought a case of GTX oil straight 30w and off into the Satan desert we went. Every thing was good until we hit the Sunrise Hwy, out of no where huge noise and lots of smoke. We pulled off the freeway onto the sunrise HWY and saw a hole in the block by the pan rail. The number 5 rod had let go right in the middle and was welded to the crank. It still ran and did not lose oil pressure so maybe it could still get us home. Remember this was WAY before everyone had a cell phone on their hip. We took the push rods off that cylinder so the valve would not open anymore. Then we used cardboard and JB weld to make a plug so to speak on that hole. We spent the next 6 hours or so waiting for it to dry then drove that thing into Sandy Eggo. I wish we had video of this but will always be in my mind.
