Ground for gas tank

Is a ground required for the tank. It seems to me that the strap would ground it.

Just trying to make sure my gauge is reading correctly.

There is a ground strap that bridges the rubber line connecting the tank and the hard line.
 
Yep, the sender is what needs to be grounded, not necessarily the tank. I can envision that rust, etc would isolate the sender from the tank
 
The sender has a synthetic material gasket between it and the gas tank bung it fits into. This essentually isolates it from ground therefore you need the strap that spans the short piece of rubber hose or a chunk of wire with each end hose clamped to the medal fuel line. No groundey then sending unit no workey
