I'm going to pick up my aspen today and the owner of the car has no idea what engine is in it because his brother swapped it out 15-20 years ago and passed away. Is there a quick way to tell beside looking for X heads?

drivers side above the starter, casting numbers, last 4 of them will give the engine cid and revision number, ex: 340-3 or 318-1 etc.

Also on the front of the block below the driver's side head, there will be a stamping of the engine size and build date, etc. sometimes very hard to see.

on the oil pan rail will be a machined pad with a vin on it, might have the full number which might help.

good luck!

Hard to get at if cars on the ground, though you can probably get a peek at it with a mirror.
