How do I decode 360 engine

I'm going to look at 68 Dart this weekend for my son and the guy also has a 360 motor to go with for a few extra bucks

what's the numbering codes for blocks and cylinder heads and where are they located also what years should I stay away from if any ????

the engine nunbers (when the motor is in the car) are on the block approximately below the master cylinder-hard to see when the motor is in there- these will tell you the year and the engine size. The numbers on the heads are located under the valve covers, other members can give you more details, they sure helped me when I found my engine.

Bill, if you are talking about LA 360 blocks, here are some numbers for you:

3418496 71-74
3810230 75-78
4179930 75-93

Note: I am a fan of the earlier '71-'74 "thick-wall" blocks but others have used later year blocks with great success.

As for 360 heads, the #s to look for are:

3418915 71-72
3671587 73-74
3769974 75-76
3671587 76 (same as 73-74)
4027469 77-86 (Note: There may be a #4021051 for these years as well).
