how does the Vacuum guage work?

I took the guage out tonight and removed the fitting on the back of the guage. All the interior pieces appear in good working order. There was a small bit of corrosion on the back of the guage after i removed the fitting. I can't see any hole here where the vacuum would pull from. how do these guages work?

are you trying to see how much vacuum your car has??...there should be a hose attached to the gauge and you hook the hose to the back of the carb,while the car is idling, to see how much vacuum you have.
