My lovely wife bought me a real nice set of custom floor mats for our Cuda and they fit great but there's one problem. The carpet that's about 5 yrs. old now has faded a bit. Does anybody know an easy way to dye it to get the black looking black again instead of dark grey?

Thanks, Tracy

Simple. Cut off it's oxygen.....:toothy10:

But seriously; Any household fabric dye (RIT, etc) should work, if you can find a container that will allow you to submerge it in water. Maybe an empty 55 gallon drum?

When I worked at a detail shop many years ago we would mix up the dye in a bucket of hot water and then brush it on the carpet, let it set for about 1/2 hour then vacuum the excess water up with shop vac.

I need to do this myself, the carpet in my Cuda is almost purple in the back now. Mixing RIT and putting it into a spray bottle will get it on the carpet without having to remove it. If you can remove the carpet, a kids pool would be great for dipping the carpet into a mixture of dye.

Just thought that Id mention that knowing what the carpet is made of would make dying it easier before you spend a lot of time and $. Some carpets are nylon (which will show fading after a year or 2) and some are made of polypropylene / olefin (basically a plastic fiber)

Thanks for all the tips guys. I know submerging it would be the best but I'd sure love it if I didn't have to take the car apart again so I think I'll try the method of doing it in the car and see how it turns out.

Badwawg I appreciate that hint also but I'm not sure if I can figure out what material it is. Not a carpet specialist and don't know any. The RIT dye doesn't cost much so I guess I'll try it.

you can dye it the SEMS aresol dye too. Takes several cans to cover and it will feel like steel wool under bare feet. Still easiest way to do it.

I had an original but very faded black carpet, I had nothing to lose so I tried the Rit dye and it worked out really well. I used a small brush to apply and spread out the dye, it took a little time but it come out pretty good.
