How would you determine the price to pay for a used crate engine?

Let say the engine was $4K new, fully up oil pan to carb through Summit.
The engine was run for ~25K miles, seems in good shape. Its being pulled for a larger engine.

What do you figure its worth?

The guys on Trucks did a pretty good segment on doing this. Before you pull it, do a compression or leak down test on it. Video of it starting and running would also help. If you have any oil change/ service records, they will also help. Once it's out, spend an afternoon cleaning it up and making it look pretty. Search powerblocktv.com for the episode I mentioned, it was pretty well done, in my opinion.

what engine 340 360 318 408 413? and whats inside? ball park 1/2 price of new

well, hate to say it, but its a GM crate 350 HO for a different project. The only attraction is that its plug in and go. swapping it into another GM engined vehicle.

I disagree with half price, full price included a warranty. I would say more like 1/4 price IF he can show you the receipt. In any event I wouldn't pay any more than about a grand for a used engine, and that is what it is, used and who knows how hard it was used either.

I can't argue with you there cuda, but the better his documentation is, the more he should be able to make. Half price is probably a good starting point though.

the 350 chebby crate is on sale at summit or somewhere this week for 1300 bucks free shipping in the us not much reason to buy used but this my not be the same engine your talking about.
