On a small block, at what main brg clearance would a HV pump be a smart thing to use? Is .003 too loose for a std. volume pump? Thanks in advance.

im sure you will here different ways of this but here's what i think I always run 3thousands clearance threw the bottom end and i always run hi volume pump or change the spring in the pump.and i always run straight wt.oil like 40or 50wt.iv never lost a motor and i would not be afraid to put any of my motors in a dirt track car.hope this helps

At .003" I would use an HV pump. At .002" or below a standard pump is fine.

I use the HV pump for two builds: when the engine is going to see sustained high rpm and only with a larger capacity sump; and when it's an unknown used shortblock getting a Krylon rebuild. All others get a stock pump with the high pressure relief.

Thanks gentlemen. I think I will buy a HV pump since I have a 6 qt pan and I plan to turn it 6800.
