Hi.
340. HFT lunati. Lifters summit 2011. Most is stock inside. CR 10.2:1 . Car been sitting for a couple of weeks. Noicy at start up but get better after a while. Trying to figure out what to do.
In the process i see that the grove on the lifter is leaving the hole for the oil when it starts to lift. Blocking the grove. NOT full time oiling? Trying to find info in my books and trying here also.

how about a little bit more info on the eng build.
Hyd....flat tappet.....roller.......cam spec. exc

How do you see that bore scope?

Nope. Happends everytime. Silent and nice when i turn it of after driving. Was not from the begining after rebuild. Friend say that narrow oil "band" on lifter can be a problem.

Not any issue for the groove to move above the oil hole when lifting. It will fill when not lifting, and the check valve should keep the oil inside.

You probably have a lifter with a check valve in side that is failing. You can try to disassemble the lifter and clean it. Sometimes that works. But often the lifter just needs to be replaced.

Finding the lifter is the challenge. Run the engine until the oil is warm and the lifter noise stops. Pull off the valve covers. Push down on each pushrod one at a time when the lifter is on the base circle (no lift). Rotate the engine 2 times so that you can check each lifter when it is on the base circle. If you find a lifter that is soft when you push down, that is your likely problem lifter.

As said, please give more info on the heads, and the rockers. Are they the original 340 types?

And by the way, we had 2 new lifters from Crane fail in the same way in <1000 miles. So this problem is not uncommon anymore.

Thanks. Just was i was affraid of. Rockers is compcams and aluheads from swedish company. No name brand.
Best option is buy new lifters and move on.........

There have been a lot of issues with hydraulic lifters, just research it here on the forum.
Some manufactures maybe be better than others.
Stay away from the cheap Chinese lifters.
IMO it think it related to higher spring pressures in performance engines.
I will no longer use hydraulic lifters.

Almost 50 years ago I bought a brand new 340 Duster. First oil change I used Castrol GTX and had lifter noise after car sat for a week. Changed to Quaker State Super blend and no more noise. Of course oils were a lot different 50 years ago, but it might be a cheaper way of eliminating or solving the problem. Try a different oil.

To isolate which lifter is noisy simply run the engine with valve covers off and use a hose as a stethoscope over all the rockers individually you will soon hear the noisy lifter.

hydraulic lifters are fairly sensitive to foreign debris it could be just a piece of gasket sealer or some other foreign debris has gotten into the lifter, hopefully it's not the beginning of a swipe lobe

I HAD THAT ON MY 340 made noise on startup would go away after 5 or 10 minutes , changed lifters twice different brands not from China had the same problem for 7 years 15,000 km was using royal purple 10-40 xrp synthetic . nothing everwent wrong in all those years and miles , just that PIA noise at startup . now using hughes roller lifters and cam/rockers , no more noise

Are you using Hughes hydraulic or solid rollers?

All the paraffin in QS and Penzoil was a great sound deadener LOL

Hi guys.
Thanks for input. Found at least 1 lifter malfunction and decided to change them all.
Went with CC high energi hydralic set. 1 start up and no sound. Cross my fingers it will stay that way.

Hope you are past your issues.
Report back no and then on progress after some miles.

There's your answer. Comp Cams has had a bunch of noisy lifter issues the last few years.

Sell those old ones 'as is', some guys dont care if it rattles for a minute or 2 at startup...like me. Could also shim those hydros and make them solids.

Please elaborate on shimming the hyd's to make them solid's.
Thanks

Lol
When I put my 340 together with a Comp xe268h
Most if not all the lifters were noisy at first start up
For a couple of seconds until there was oil pressure.
And after shutting if off , then starting
it would rattle all over again.
I pulled off the valve covers and watched the valves slowly close that were open!
I called Comp to ask them about it
The guy said what do you care if it rattles when you start it?!
I guess they had a lot of people complaining...lol
Anyway I replaced them with a new set from a mopar performance cam I've had since 1990
They have never once bled down and rattled like the Comps.
The xe cam is noisy on it's own but that's a whole different issue...
Next cam will be a solid flat..
My 2 cents
