ok
this is a stock 74 318, Cal car with auto and air
Set at TDC as per sticker
It has been driving great until about 2 weeks ago,
It would stumble coming fast off of a light, and even as
increase in speed she would miss, So after checking all the
vacuum hoses, I swithced out the Dist (exchange) at
autozone, ok not the best Dist but thats what it is.
so after I got the new Dist in, I checked the timing, and
it like firing like way off the marks. I mean way off
engine turns clock wise at static I set the marks and the
rotor on #1 cylinder..
yes could be a loose Dist shaft.
It is set with number 1 on compression
any thoughts?

You still have to turn the dizzy and adjust the timing. Just setting it in with the engine at TDC and the rotor at #1 is only to get it running. You still need to put the light on it....or vacuum gauge. Dennis

Dennis
Yes Dennis, I know all that.. my mind was just on a trip....
turned out I had not let the car come up to temp..
BTW... this 74 Cal car is set at 750 rpm at tdc... vacuum pulls it to
about 4 deg before,
Thanks for you input..
take care
Dave

Set the timing where the engine wants it, not what the book says. Those old settings are so it will pass emissions etc. and run like junk.

Try it at 12 BTDC, no vac adv attached. See how it runs and verify your total number so it's not too high, about 34*.
