most of these shows are
i remember one i used to watch, it was on the british discovery channel
i think it was called junkyard wars or something
there would be two teams, given 500 bucks and access to a full garage
they then had 5 days to complete a build and then the two builds competed
my favorite one was where they had to make a 4X4 and compete on a track
wouldnt you know it, both teams found a match pair of little cars in the junkyard (one of them had 2 mint VW golfs)
the stuff in the yard was definitely staged but still fun to watch
(found it "scrapheap challenge" )
They didn't buy the car or even talk about it, the Barracuda was just in the shot when they panned around with the camera.
