Large Frame Starter

Will a “large frame” 1.8 starter, which is ½” longer than the small frame 1.5, fit on a 318 in a 1972 Scamp with stock manifolds and a 904?

I am assuming yes, but just want to make sure there is no clearance with the side of the block and the longer front armature cover of the large frame starter.

Any gear drive starter will fit any engine for which a gear drive was originally made, which pretty much includes all slants, small block and big block V8's in cars and light trucks. I've been told they also will fit 426 hemis, although that is not what they came with. I don't know about "heavy" trucks and class A motorhomes, or industrial or marine.

"Why" you would want to use one in this day and age, is beyond me, and I'm an old guy, VERY difficult to teach new tricks, LOL
