I am working on a case involving a triaxle dump truck (a young man was run over by it as it was backing up). One of the photos showed the rear differential with a strange thing on it (the arrow is pointing to it). What is this thing? Is it related to the back-up alarm (which was working intermittently)? If it is, does it look broken? The truck is a 2006 Sterling tri-axle dump truck.

The firm sold the truck since the accident so we can't go and inspect it.

If I had to guess I'd say speed sensor. (could be temp)
Backup alarms are usually on the backup light 12v circuit, and come on when the truck is put in reverse.

This truck was said to have problems with the backup alarm in that it did not come on with the lights unless the shifter was fully in reverse. The lights would come on though even if the alarm wasn't on.

Sorry. No help.. I have a straight truck (1st pic) and a Semi (2nd pic). Neither has the mystery part. The straight truck does have a backup alarm, it is not wired to the rear end.
