need a new chainsaw

I was just watching a vid of a Chinese clone of a Stihl 066/660? 24/25" bar, cost like $350 instead of the Stihl @ $1900. Pretty big saw according to the guy using it. I just gave a buddy a little orange Sears 12" from 1978. Carb was shot so he's rebuilding it, then the throttle linkage came out and he had to take the whole thing down to nothing to reattach the thing. My project at the same time was a featherlite/Husky XT260 weed whacker. Broken primer bulb and the thing wont start with the cap off. replaced bulb and all the rotted fuel lines but I think the pulse carb needs pressure (has a leaking cap) in the tank to push fuel into the carb?

Try and get an old one. Fully buildable and last a lofe time.

All saws that run on gas need repair. #1 is the carbs were not built for todays gas. They gum up and wont start after a year or so. Always run them dry before storing for the winter.

You can buy carb rebuild kits. They are super cheep. I have yet to see a saw i cant make run with a rebuild of the carb, a tank flush and new lines or sanding the rust off the mag with some fine sandpaper.

I have built some stupid 2 stroke engines. They weigh in aroumd a pound or 2 are 50+ CC and spin to over 20,000 RPM ALL DAY LONG.

I got heavy into small 2 strokes in Tahoe. I would modify some for my smoke jumper buddys and then got into racing 2 stroke powered boats. (RC)
 
I hate supporting china just as much as everyone else but I bought a Holzfforma G444 from Farmertech. It's an MS440 clone. Had it since last October. 336 bucks shipped. I've got probably 12- 15 tanks through it. Absolutley rips. I couldn't afford a new stihl of the same size. It came down to a box store saw or a Farmertech. Commies or not these guys are all over social media helping out their customers. Very involved. I'll be buying their 660 clone for milling here soon.

They have quite the following. They've got me drinkin the koolaid lol. I love my blue clone. Of course I'd love a genuine Stihl but I just couldn't justify paying a mortgage payment for a firewood saw.
 
I have a light-duty stihl. Only thing I've ever run into is that it will not start at all on old gas, so if its something you grab only every once in a while it can be aggravating. I've had poulans that'd run on damn near anything you pour in the tank.
 
I have a Stihl 051 that I bought from an estate sale 30 years ago, it's still going strong. Yeah it's heavier than the newer models, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
 
First off , if you don't want to break the bank , then don't . Buy some cheap Chinese pos and be done with it . The reason we are in this mess everyone wants cheap Chinese crap . go ahead , do it . I've had a Stihl o28av for 35 years . Cost me $.35 a year . How cheap do you want it ?

the problem with paying $.35 a year is that i have to pay up front

id gladly pay even $10.00 a year, if i could pay it per year

hard to tell in todays economy
but lets say $150.00

and with used saws, i just dont know what to look for
 
Stihl is the way to go.

I have used them professionally & I have one for my personal use.

If you have access to non-ethanol gas, it is better for anything with smaller gas engines.
 
Talk to a firefighter they'll tell you Stihl, talk to a tree trimmer they'll tell you Husqvarna.

Trimming & falling can use the same type of tool.

I have done a lot of both. I have used Husqvarna, McCulloch, Poulon & Stihl, I I have been using them for over 40 years.

The only one I will buy for myself is a Stihl, whether falling or trimming.

cant figure this one out, should i expect that stihl 170 to come with a 16 or 18 inch blade?
(ill call them tomorrow, see if they want to make me a deal)
 
bought a stihl ms170 for about two hundred bucks from a local garden supply shop . it costed more to fix my husky then this stihl .
 
Born and raised in Oregon we know a little bit about felling trees in these parts. organization that I currently work for has no less than 50 chain saws at one time. We have bounced back between Husqvarna and Stihl we always come back to stihl spend the money get a real saw purchase a Stihl take care of it and you should never ever need to buy another saw kind of like the Mopar Muscle of the Chainsaw world

They come with a 16” bar. You can cut pretty big logs and fell pretty tall trees with 16”.
