I had to replace an axle seal, and thought I followed the FSM procedure for setting the pre-load on this full-floater, but I think I got it too tight because now I've got a slight rubbing noise.

Would anybody have an idiot-proof method of adjusting the axle pre-load? Or should I just try loosening it a little bit? Am I correct in thinking that it wouldn't be making this noise if it were too loose, so therefore it must be too tight?

I usually tighten bearing until tight but you can still turn the tire easily/then back off until there is play about .003 play then tighten nut 1/4 turn and lock it / never had a problem and I've done thousands this way .
