Need Opinions - Rebuild 904 or Move to 727?

Guys, need your opinion here... I've been told by many shops to stick with my 904 and rebuild it, and I've been told by equally as many shops to trash it and go with a 727.

Car: 1970 Dart Swinger

Motor: 408 stroker; +/- 400 HP & TQ

Driving: Mostly daily, occasional track use (likely 6 times a year)

Stall: 2500 Hughes

Rearend: 8-3/4; 4.10 gears

I honestly would like to keep the 904 as it is the transmission that came with my motor & driveshaft and would likely result in less gray areas during the swap from the /6 drivetrain.

Is it worth rebuilding my 904? Or should I just go with a 727?

To the guys with similar numbers, what have your experiences been with a well-rebuilt 904? If I stuck with the 904, I'd want to get a RMVB installed to keep things fun... Any foreseeable issues with that?

Bucky Hess ran his 8 second Barracuda with a 904. What more needs to be said?
 
I have roughly the same combination that you're running. 408 making 400 h.p. with a Hughes 2500 converter & 3.55 gears. I'm running a home built 904 and it's just fine.
As said above,there's no need for a 727.

If you didn't already have a 904 I'd say go for the stronger 727, but since you have one, I'd say build the 904 to handle the hp and trq since it can be done.
 
I would stay with the 904..........

Reverse Manual Valve body...piece of cake...been using those in 904 for 25 yrs..in fact we have been beating on 904s with transbrakes for 25 yrs....
 
904 is lighter then a 727 and it take more horse power to turn a 727 then a 904. A 904 built with the right parts can handle a lot of horsepower. I have a friend with a race car with a 426 Hemi and he uses a 904 transmission to shift the gears

Looks like it's all weighing towards me staying with the 904.

Will be rebuilding it this week.

My ex-boss runs a 904 behind a Steve Schmidt 500" pro-stock engine in the high 6's, at a hair over 200MPH.
Lots of trick parts of course, but as others have said, stick with the 904. Not that you need the same transmission as either he or Bucky Hess has, but they are capable of handling high horsepower/torque.
