New car rant

I spent a LOT of money on this 04 Sierra, and wish I hadn't. Yeh, it's s "nice", but it has a brake problem, and it turns out there's LOTS of little details I don't like about this thing, including the damn automatic lighting controls, and the overly complicated HVAC controls. And you are right. There ARE advantages to having a "parking lot beater."

You traded in a WRX and got 1500 less than you paid for it after 3 years? WTH did you pay for it originally?? Uhh, if new was only $1500 more than 3 years old, I reckon someone would pony up for new. Ive never heard of such a return on a trade-in unless that WRX was a super model (Like the Buick GNX) and the next version tanked. Sounds like you got the deal of the century. Good on ya..

Generally used cars save you some dough but not always. The WRX , Toyota Tacoma , most Honda products , Porsche 911s have very good resale and you are better off buying new.
That being said ....Here are a few cars within 100 yards of me.

I have a new car. Love it and have no regrets. However I have have three old cars. OLD CARS NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE

I drive a 2000 Volvo V70R that I got for 1700$ lol, my newest vehicle. My backup is my 65 Dart and then I have 3 undrivable project cars. I can’t see myself in a newer vehicle but my lady likes them.

Love Volvo's. They are tough to beat in reliability and highest in safety. And they're Swedish!

I love Volvo’s I bought the V70 with 0 expectations the tranny shifted hard I knew they were bad transmissions. Here almost 3 years later transmission still going and I haven’t done anything to the car. I’ve got a 1979 242 GT Volvo project also.

yes a subaru wrx, esp the sti is comparable to a gn/gnx

they are both 6 cyl turbo, but the wrx weighs a LOT less!

toyota solara convertibles actually appreciate!

I got to drive brand new Gran Nationals back in 87 and they were cool ! I was so happy that a real muscle car was returning to the market.

I am 63 never bought a new car, the most I ever paid for a vehicle is 2200 a recently purchased 1996 low milage rust free Toyota Camry wagon also my first Jap, I felt
a little guilty at first. People tend to hate me for my cheapness, I don't care.

I think you want to part ways with that 242.... ;-)

I drove my 68 Valiant 40 miles roundtrip every day this summer, and I gotta admit, I'm kinda over the no AC and getting 15mpg, and watching the temp gauge as I'm sitting on the freeway. I'm looking at picking up a Magnum to daily drive after I graduate college, but that being said, I'm hesitant to take my Valiant off of daily driver duty because I don't want it to become a project that just sits, relying on it to get to work forces me to fix it so I can drive it. Would the car benefit from being able to take some serious time in the garage to really go through it right? Absolutely, but I don't want to fall out of love with the car because I can't drive it.

So true !
Funny thing is with all these exotic cars I get to drive only the NSX gets more looks and comments than my Barracuda while I am driving them.

It all depend on how far and where you drive to work OR if you are retired poor like me! .. I could not afford the taxes and insurance for a new one!!!
I have owned 3 new vehicles in my life and I am 71 !! ha. A 68 1/2 ton Ford, a 76 1 ton chew cab dooley, AND a 95 Ram 1 ton Cummins, which I still have!!! If I had the $ I would not buy a new one of any brand!!! Don't need a new one, a pickup that ain't 24 years old would be nice though!!!!!
Back when I needed pickups I always had 2 or 3, but I usually had a spare or two that were used but not woreout.

$60000 for a diesel pickup is insane to me.

Last new vehicles bought were a '99 Camry for the wife and 6 mos. later I bought a '00 Durango. Friend wanted the Durango so I sold it in '03, right at 3 yrs. old.
June of '08 I bought a Flame Red '06 2500 Laramie for the princely sum of 17,500. :D We retired in Jan. '12 ( had a shoulder replacement and couldn't do any heavy lifting- main requirement as a dealer tech) and had been blessed with a grandson in July '13. Forward to '17 and my wife has been driving the '06 as her DD for a while now. I had noticed she was having trouble getting in even with the step bars (she's only 5'2") and had been after her to trade the truck for a Charger. Seemed like every time she was ready some idjit in a gas station would tell her nice her truck was. Finally she agreed to it but with one requirement. She wanted a Challenger. OK.... So we wind up trading the truck (only had 120k on it) almost even for a '16 Challenger SXT. Drove it for a little over a year and got rear-ended and totalled. Bought an almost identical '17 ('16 was white, '17 is black) and ponied up about $1500 over the insurance check.
Mama's happy and it is nice to go out and get in a fairly new car to go somewhere. :) I still have my beater '00 Durango 4x4 I bought in '16 but don't think I would road trip in it. :p

A lady in service just tracked me down to talk about my Fastback ! She got a Turbine Bronze with White buckets and console A/T new in 67 for a high school graduation present. She loved that car !

I like the newer vehicals. My wife has a 2019 Jeep Trail Hawk. Super nice ride. I drive an 06 duramax diesel. The older I get the faster I drive. Radar detectors are my friend. I have a 75 Duster 360 with less than 41,000 original miles. It never made it out of the drive way this year. Kim

Buy smart. Wife found a 3 yr old Cadillac lease return. Bought it for less than half the new price. 17k miles. Just gotta shop a little. Cheap date if you need a 'classy' driver..

I still drive an old truck.

Yes... a Cadi is a good car to buy a few years old. Any car sold into rental service is one to buy used. But some cars you are better off buying new.

2012 Impreza bought new when we married in 2012. Oil
changes and filters and a cabin filter. 1 set of tires in 65K. After they snow plow, it's a blast. After a few years of reasonable payments, it's ours. And yes, Subaru regularly sends us offers on a new one. No thanks.
