Open or Suregrip?

-
Here's the OPPOSITE that can happen with an open spider differential...............I just pulled one out of my 67 (Ford 9") was an open spider I'd put in temporarily, and quickly found that either a "mudder" or a "burn out specialist" had owned it. They had spun the axles until one spider wore a big cavity in the case!!! That not only caused play in the wheel (tip in-out) and low speed noise, but it ALSO caused the spiders to bind up in a "quasi" "posi"!!!

I thought I had a photo of this mess, but cannot find it.

A quasiposi. Now that's funny.

Post a pic when you do.

I have read that when a suregrip unit is worn badly it can exhibit the signs of an open diff. Is it possible you do have a suregrip that is badly worn, although when you put enough to it it's enough to make it work?

wheels turning the opposite direction indicates spider gears.... he also said that "sometimes" it will hook up posi.......my uneducated guess would be that it's open......
higgs

I tried to find the thread we had on this subject a while back because the same thing was in question. I can't find the thread.

I'm leanin toward the open too.....but that joker sure spins hard when it spins don't it?

I had an 8 3/4 that put down 2 stripes sometimes , it was an open dif , no idea why or how it spun 2 wheels . Thought it might be a sure grip on the way out , but once opened saw it was not a sure grip
