just got my rear bezels back from chrome and I need to paint the middle strip area with the black trim paint. Any advice. I heard that I need to use an etch primer that will adhere to metal first so the paint will stick. Also, guys which way have you painted these, with a brush or lots of taping off and spray. Also, I had posted earlier about which size fastner to use on stud, and we had agreed that I should be able to use same fastner as sidemarker lights. I may not have any of these. Do you think a good automotive store would stock these fastners?

Thanks in advance everyone, yall are a great help

I have pondered this same procedure for my hub covers. in 99% of painting application I prefer to mask well and spray.

On these I am not sure a crisp masked off line is the look you want, and instead I would consider using a pin-striping brush. It takes a little practice to get smooth predictable line width, but it may look a little better.

If you do mask it, you want to use a vinyl tape called fine-line masking tape:

This is available at many chain automotive stores and certainly at the auto paint store.

Not sure on the size, but the nuts you need are called speed nuts, most chain automotive stores have these in the "help" section with the nuts and bolts:

I needed speed nut for some of my trim, the problem with the parts store "help" section I had was they come in a pack with a variety of sizes and only a few of each size, and then one size was too big and the next smaller size was too small. I know I have seen them in a hardware store but can't remember which hardware store and haven't been able to find them since.

Tape off with fine line tape. cover the rest of the paper or tape. use bulldog adhesion promoter they sell it in aerosol or in quarts. aerosol is easy and quick, follow the directions on the can. no need to scuff the area first. just spray over the chrome. let it dry and spray your color. best solution to these tough to paint areas. this is what we do at my shop. Also works great on plastic to paint over on interior pieces.
