Does the pitman arm need to be pressed on the steering box. It doesn't seem to want draw up when I put the lock washer and nut on it.

I believe there is one or more splines wider than the rest, have you got it lined up correctly. I can't imagine the nut won't pull it on.

How far on is it at the moment?

The pitman arm has a masterspline,, which needs to be aligned otherwise it'll be tuff to suck on.. you may need to clean up the splines with a file if you tried to force it on ...

Here's a photo of the arm.

Pull the lock washer off and carefully tighten the nut to move the arm further up on the shaft. Then remove the nut & reinstall the lock washer.

That should work...

They are keyed to go on one way. Also the pitman shaft is a tapered so is the pitman arm, so it wont go go all the way on. This is normal. The only tool you need is when you are removing the pitman arm, when you install it you just tighten the nut and it draws the arm on part way.

the pittman arm has 4 keyed splines on it spaced 90 degrees apart....center the steering box...
