70 Duster , four speed.. I need to pull the engine.. Would you guys pull the engine alone or leave the tranny attached ?? One way easier than the other ??? Thanks

I've done it both ways, but prefer to leave the trans on the engine and pull both together.

the both times i have pulled my 360 with an automatic i have pulled both engine and trans at the same time.

If you have access to a car lift this may help you out.

Pull them both together.
It's a major PITA to align the trans in the clutch with the trans in when you put it back together.

Whew!!! That was a job.. Pulled them both together. !@#$ headers !!!!

Quick Question for this thread
same setup but what if you have HP 340 exhaust manifolds ?
pull motor with manifolds & disconnect at leadpipe or pull manifolds before pulling motor ?
manifolds have studs at both ends !
PS .. ordered new motor mounts & mine looks like it has rubber pads & new ones are spool type .. will they interchange on 70 model ?
Thanks for input

I'm the other way around.....If the transmission doesn't need any work, I'd leave it in place. Having done hundreds of them over the years I don't usually have any trouble getting the clutch splines lined up. Stick the tranny in gear and rock the crank back and forth with slight pressure pushing the engine toward the firewall. If you hung the engine square with the bell housing, it should slide right in. Depending on year, body style, and engine, sometime I leave the exhaust manifolds on, sometimes I pull them first. '64-76 V8A bodies ....I always pull the LH manifold. '68-70 340 cars.....I always pull both so there is no chance of breaking one. Most B and E bodies....I leave them on. Sometime on an HP big block B or E I'll pull one or both depending on what the clearance looks like and if it has PS or not. I usually pull headers loose from the motor but I leave them wired to the inner fenders unless they're an odd brand that gets in the way of something.
The sandwhich mounts don't interchange with the spool mounts....takes a different K-member.

Holy coincidence, I just posted this in another thread from 1982 . 4spd 340 coming out of my 70 Duster.

This came up the other day, look
at a bottom install. No header problems, no paint scratches, motor and trans one shot and its a 1 man job.
