Sending unit rust

Probably would wreck it. You can remove it for the soak. Bend the 3 tabs and remove the wire winding on its housing. Cut the strap or wire and splice it back together later.
 
If you carefully take the nut off of the sender post. You can remove the post and winding with out damage.

I bought a rusted sender from a wrecking yard. After soaking the metal parts (winding and post removed) in evaporust. It was swiss cheese. On a positive note I did get a good winding out if it.
