I'm about to buy an engine that's still in a car to be tried out, the car is a -63 New Port that from what I know should have an 361 original but the guy says the owner before him said it's a 413 & as from my experiance that's a New Yorker engine...
So how do I spot what it is?

Easy.......only RB that is the high or long stroke blocks, 413, 426, 440, have the ID pad up by the distributor that is HORIZONTAL and sort of immediately adjacent to the valley cover clamp bar. That pad normally has either the CID or a couple numerals, as in 426, 26, or 42 because of poor stamping.

The B low deck engines do not have that pad

RB (413/426/440) will have the ID pad on the divers side (as you face the engine) that is flush with the lifter valley pan attaches shown below. This helps wth quick ID if your not good a seeing the beck height difference. The B engines (350/361/383/400) do not have that. Ad as noted its also cast on the side of the block.

Ah, that seems easier as I reckon I won't have to look under the exhaust manifold & pipe & whatever else might be in the way...
