Hope to finish engine assembly in the next few weeks, and can't decide which cam to use. I have an Egge part #VMD0015, supposed to be a stock cam for 273, but that's what they said about the first one they sent me that had an elgin number on the box that on the Elgin site was a hydraulic cam. I have a Comp Cams part # 20-246-4
http://http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=665&sb=2
and an Isky #s-50-e4 (can't find it online)
Which cam would be best, its a stock 273 2 barrel, bored .030, new valves and springs, will be stock exhaust manifolds and single exhaust, stock auto, with wtock convertor.
Thanks

I think both of those cams are too big for what you are doing. Why not just switch to a small hydraulic cam and not have to worry about lash? Anyways The comp cam is a 270s magnum with 224deg dur at .050 .468 lift. the isky cam would work better, but I think dual exhaust, should be used its a solid with 216 at .050 and .425 lift.

If you want to stay with a solid lifter cam like your original, go with the Isky E-4.
It's just a little bit bit bigger than the stocker and works well. You can find it easier at Flatlander Racing website:http://www.flatlanderracing.com/

So is a swap to hydraulic simply swapping the valve gear, cam, rockers shafts, and arms, lifters and pushrods, with no other mods needed? I do have a 318 I could rob rocker shafts and arms off of.
Toolman what part of Iowa are you from?

Waterloo, and you? I haven't done it myself but you should be able to use the 318 parts for the hydraulic cam. For those of you that have done that swap chime in wit what works. tmm

Elk Point, South Dakota, just north of Sioux City, Iowa. Been debating going hydrualic but already have all the stuff for solid. My brother put solid in a 340 and if I remember right there was an oil mod he had to do, seems like it was plugging(or unplugging) an oil galley.

Been there. My wife grew up north of Sioux City and went to school in Lawton. No mods needed for you. Yours was made for solids. I think the oil galley mod you mentioned is to restrict oil if you convert to solids from hydraulic.

I got a stock 340 (look up specs) cam and new lifters for cheap, would wake that 2bbl right up...(shameless plug) but the stock 2bbl cams were pitiful. going from mech to hudro is just cam, lifters and pushrods. There is no oiling mods as the solid tappets were just that, solid dumbells, didnt redirect oil or anything, just filled the galleys and dribbled the excess oil out to the chain through the drilled bolt. Member just sold a 273 4bbl intake for 65 bucks and says he has a few more, hit him up!
