thinking of using my safety bonus from work to help pay for a metal detector. Just to play around with in the yard. I get $70 to use at a list of stores(Cabelas, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, are some of the outdoor stores on the list). Wondering if anyone has any advice on what to look for in a metal detector? Would like to go around $150-&170 range. Sadly no auto parts, or resto parts places are on the list.
Thanks
Aaron

Aaron, we just got one for Billy's mom for Christmas -- great timing! We didn't know anything about them either so I'll share the research with you.

Just like anything else, the more you spend the better it's going to be. I've learned that the cheap ones are a waste of money altogether because it won't show you anything below a couple inches from the surface, or tell you what it might be, so you'll dig for five minutes to discover ... a rusty finishing nail. :-D

This is what we ended up getting for her, 84 years old and bored in front of the television. It's lightweight, good for a novice, and usually runs around $300 so we got a great deal on it. Cool, thanks. Guess there is no big rush as it is too durn cold out right now and the ground is white and probably will stay that way until March.
