When I was growing up, all the DZ 302 camaros didnt have 302's in em. Its was common, when you did actaully see a 302 chevy, it was at a car show, so yeah 340's are getting to be like that. You couldnt get me to part with a 340 for a 360, theres no point, I also like the interchangeability between 318-340 as far as direct swap. 360's too much bs with balance pulleys etc.
Hyup I can see that in a tire-challenged car. I figured that out,back in 1970 when those 340Swingers really hit it off. While my buddies were spending every nickle on go-fast parts, I was trying to make those stinking skinny hard-compound E70-14s hook. I gave up and upsized, got some 4.10z, some custom slapper bars, and then, my otherwise stock 340Swinger became the car to beat, in my hick community. Just about everybody in highschool lined up with AJ,at least once,and most lost. So I get what you are saying, "there's no point".
But in a Duster/Demon/2nd-gen Barracuda, which can easily accept a 295/50-15s, and carefully, up to 325/50-15s; Ima thinking; different story.
The external balance thing can be changed; and has to be similarly changed for an early 340 when the factory 719g fat-boy forged slugs are swapped out, for hypers at around 502.
As for dressing a 360, except for the crank/balance deal, everything else swaps right over.
Since my 360 is bored out to 4.04and a half, whenever I used to get that question, I said it's sortof a stroked 340. "Oh how big is it then? " She's a 367 now.
A 367 is almost 7% bigger than a 343; and that translates to about 7% more torque........ starting right off idle. Street diff ratios are staggered at just a tic under 10% apiece.
At peak horsepower, and both engines at 1hp/cid, the 367 has a 24hp (7%) advantage. That's a little better than about one full cam size.
But as to torque, the advantage at stall rpm is already a big deal.
The whole point of a 360 for me,was to run less cam for similar street performance, and or less gear for better fuel mileage, and I run a clutch, so stall don't apply. I walked right on by a pile of 340s five deep, to grab me a 360 core.But of course, the 367 will annihilate 255s (even the 325s) which is about the biggest section width you can fit into a Swinger.... so

I had exactly ONE small-tub performance Mopar since 1969 when I got my driver's license, and that cured me. I still have a soft spot for the 70Swingers, (one of the best-looking Mopars of it's genre, ever) but after I sold that car in 1975, I've never had the urge to own another.
' Course today we have Cal-Tracs and such.
Those E70s were nasty business.
