That, and a foot or two of nylon rope. Works great. There are going to be some varying opinions, but this one from Harbor Freight works just fine.
I have used it on multiple engines.

That's the Rope Trick... remove spark plugs, remove rockers, bring cylinder in question to BDC. insert cotton 3/8" cord into the cylinder till it is mostly full. hand rotate piston toward TDC till the rope is slightly compressed against the face of the valves. use what ever method you like to relieve spring pressure and remove retainers. no chance of valves falling into the cylThat, and a foot or two of nylon rope. Works great.
Human nature is so interesting. everyone who replied inserted "spring" into the second sentence of the OPs post, good catch!you cant remove the valves with the head on the block

LOL.. I just caught that. I was thinking valve seals. Seen a word that wasn't even there.you cant remove the valves with the head on the block
I have one of these as well, but it's a PITA to have to move it from one cylinder to the next. It needs a little re-engineering, to use a full length bar. I used it one time, to install 1116s on my Eddies.I have this one and it works great. You have to have the piston at TDC and use air pressure to hold the valve up or use the rope trick. I like it because you can get to the valve stem keepers fairly easily.

You clearly have never seen a blown up fuel engine. You can remove a lot without taking off a valve cover. LOL
