washer behind the inside adjuster for side mirror

God this is going to sound lame. I'm putting my 70 Dart GT back together after being stripped to a bare shell. Today I put a new driver side adjustable side mirror on - it looks GREAT!!! But then I went to put the adjuster toggle on the inside of the door and I am apparently missing something. Is there a specialized washer that goes on the inside of the door over the adjuster toggle that the inside chrome bezel actually tightens against? I went to put the bezel on and clearly there must be something that keeps the mechanism from pulling that far through the door metal. Please send a picture if you can because I don't even know what I'm looking for...

Two types (at least) one is a spring steel lock plate and the other is a threaded nut.

It's not the threaded nut - it's the other one. Anybody have a picture???
