Weird smell

Just wondering if it is normal when breaking in a new third member to have a weird smell, just running the car up on jack stands at idle for the first time with the new carrier and i smell something almost like burning wood

You did put gear-oil in it right?
Then,Probably your brakes.
If it kindof burn your nose, check your drums for heat.....carefully! , they should remain cold

I would run it with oil in it until I got the smell and then go check where it's getting hot it maybe brakes or it could be a tight pinion or a number of things .

Yeah i put the friction modifier first then the royal purple gear oil until it came out the fill plug, is it possible i put too much grease on the axle bearings, also i did an oil change weeks back when i first put the car up on stands and used the valvoline vr1 with zinc, could it be the smrll from the zinc

My smelliphone couldn't pick it up! That kind of smell is probably brakes dragging. (and brakes can be a drag)
