After reading the Chrysler 8-3/4" Rear Axle Guide (Mymopar) that was linked in another thread, I was left wondering...

Would Ma mopar put a 741 case with an 8 3/4 cone sure grip in a 69 340 Dart GTS on the line?

I think that it's possible a 741 was installed at the factory but not likely because the 742 and 489 cases seem to be better suited.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

AlV

Yes...they definitely did things like this

Probably more likely to have a 741 in it than anything else.

Cool! Thanks for the feedback.
I have a 741 and was wondering if that application was correct.

Thanks.

You are good. 68' and 69' GTS, and 383 cuda 69' all have 741 case . mine are all 3.23
sure grip. 383 Belvederes, 66 and 67 also had the741. It is a tough unit.

That's great to hear, with the smaller 1 3/8 pinion stem, and the description in the article I started wondering.

It was this paragraph that started the gears turning for me.

"1-3/8" small stem pinion (aka. '741')>
Carrier casting numbers: 1820657 (1957-1964), 2070741 (1964-1972). This assembly was typically used in low weight/low horsepower applications through low weight/medium horsepower and high weight/low horsepower applications. Pinion depth and bearing preload is set with shims. Differential bearing setting (ie. backlash ) is set with threaded adjusters."

My 70 340 4speed Duster I bought in 72 had a 741. I know because I bought a set of 4.30 gears for it.

The '69 340 Swinger I bought in November 1969 came out of the factory with a non-SureGrip 489 with 3.23 gears. A couple of years later it roamed the streets with a Sure Grip and 4.89 gears behind a built 340 and 727 with a reverse-pattern manual valve body.
Notice I said "roamed the streets"? You didn't want to get on the freeway with those gears, but it sure was fun stoplight to stoplight.

They musta had chevy on the brain.Maybe they meant high weight/low horsepower! I know, the 8 3/4 was not an option for them, it should have been! :violent1:HAHA

All is correct, according to the 68 and 69 parts manual, The 741 case was offered in all 67-69' model cars, Including HP cars, and the 742 case was an available option on the order sheet for 68', as was the 489 for the 69. Just check the box!

That clears it up perfectly. I'm glad you had that parts manual.
Is the manual available on line? If not I'll pick one up.

Thanks for your insight!

I Bet! Hahahah,

I'm going to run 3:91's with a warmed up 340 and a 727 /w TF-2.

I don't know for sure if they are online. In the 90's I hawked ebay for every one of these that came up for sale. I would be happy at any time to look up any part # anyone needs. I have the 62',66',67',68',69' model years. They are a big help, another one just sold on ebay for over $200.00 for the 70-71 model year. I couldn't get to it in time.DAMN IT!
