It was an unbelievable pain in the *** changing the pickup and reluctor in my 318. Can't imagine they ever intended it to be replaced. But it did fix it - starts much easier now, cold and hot, all the time.

Was there some easy way to change these parts? Needed a small gear puller, had to VERY carefully remove 4 side screws from the distributor (one slip and they are gone forever), pull vaccuum advance, remove a plate assy to get to the clip holding the pickup assembly. Instructions with the parts didn't say anything at all about that. Took a day and a backache.

Right, would have been easier to pull the dizz, I had the trick wrench. Don't you have to worry about disturbing the position?

If you decide to pull it, close up the advance slot a little and ditch the heavy spring, you won't believe how much better the car will run. Did this to a stock '65 single points and it runs better than the electronic accel billetech it replaced :evil4:

It runs a lot better with the new reluctor and pickup, since it's a '76 in California, can't change too much because of communist smog check rules.
