hello. i have a 68 cuda fastback. originally came with a 318, and 489 case 8 3/4 rear. how do i tell what tranny it has by looking at it underneath the car?? 727 or 904?? are there a different number of bolts on the pan? i cant find any numbers on it from what i can see...

Shape of the pan is probably the easiest way visually .Anbody got a graphic of the pan shapes 904/727 ?

i thot that the 489 didn't come out till the 70's? and my guess would be a 904, unless it was a hipo 318...

727 pan has a bump on it. 904 is more or less square. 727 pan pic is attached.

Well your gonna get a hands on now about your 904,your gonna need to build it up for that smokin stroker motor!I got some good advise for parts to build my 904 for racing behind my 408 stroker from Chris Andrews Racing. He goes by the name Duster346.

Hey there!

That 904 is for the 68 cuda that has a 318. It will stay a 318 too, I'm just gonna put an edelbrock performer on it, with comp cams pro magnum roller rocker arms on it...Think that's all I'ma do to the motor...

My 408 stroker is for my 70 Dart, and it has an 833 4 speed :)

904 will have a small yoke...

Both the 727 and 904 can use either the small of big yoke. I've seen them both ways.

Mopardude318 just for your reference the 489 case didn't come out until 69 so somebodies put it in there. Not original. Even A-bodies that had a 8-3/4 didn't use the 489 case unless it was a big block car. They generally used the 741 case.

No 68 car would have a 489 originally, or a SB727 for that matter. Of course, anything could have been changed in the years since 68. And for you fishy68, I am rebuilding an 8 3/4 from a 71 Duster that came with a 489 case 3:23 SG. Never say never when it comes to Mopar!!! Geof

thanks for clearing that up for me. kinda bugs me that it didnt come with the car, and that something was replaced, bright side is that at least i have 489 case 8 3/4 instead of a 7 1/4...

that's why I said "They generally came with a 741 unless it was a big block". I'm sure some did get by knowing Mopar. But let me ask you this, are you absolutely positive it is the original to the car? A 39 year old car could have had it swapped sometime during it's life. Just another possibility.

One more thing Geof. My 68 Cuda was originally a 318 with a 727. I ran the numbers to verify it as I didn't expect it was original when I bought it but I found out it was all original. So again, "never say never" with Mopar
