Almost done with the 4 speed build. Which way does the seal go inside of the front bearing retainer? I think it goes in metal side first but I am not positive. My books say nothing about how it goes in.

The lip goes to the inside (source of oil), so yes, the medal part/backing goes in first, you'll be looking at the rubber part with the wire spring when you're done.
