You tell me.... 340 X Heads

I have been told by a member or two on here that I do not have X heads. My car is a 60,000, Formula S, 340, 4 speed.

I DO NOT HAVE AN X NEXT TO ANY SPARK PLUG HOLE.

Well today I pulled the valve covers and here is what I found......

pass side

casting number... 2531894-1
other numbers..... 340(something ground off), I found a small 1 2 3 also cast into the head.
Date code 9-4-67 (as cast 09047) (would be correct for my cars build date)

drive side

casting number... 2531894-1
other numbers..... 340 AAWJ, I found a small 1 2 3 also cast into the head.
Date code (ground off)

So one head has a date code and a removed AAWJ after the 340.
The other has AAWJ after the 340 and the date code removed.

My book says 68-71 340 heads. My X heads also have an X inside on the lower rail by the valve cover seal. I seen a demon last week with 340 heads with no markings by the spark plug he said he gets questioned about it!!! If they don't have an X, they are not X heads but are the same for all intent and purposes? .02 Walt

2531894 is the casting number for the X heads. X casted in to them or not they are X heads. Theres J heads out there missing the J or casted with an O or a U.

When was your car built?
The first run of 1968 Hamtramck-Assembled 340 A bodies seem to come out with the '894 heads and no external 'X' markings.
I personally have seen a total of 3 sets, all 1968s, without the external 'X'es on them.

1 other way an 'X' head can be identified is by the 2 lines (ll) cast into the ends of each head, right below the valve cover rails.
The 1973-'74 '587 can be confused for 'X' heads beause they have the same (ll) mark, but can be discounted by knowing about the Air Injection bosses.
The '587 heads also have wider 'feet' on the lower row of headbolts than 'X' heads do.

Mark.

Just to play the advocate, the 70 340 6 barrel and the 72 340 and the 71 and 72 360 all share the same casting number "3418915" heads, but we know their all different!!!!!!! :snakeman: If they don't have an x their not x's.

Hey Walt,
"915" heads are "J" heads not "X" heads:argue:
