Outrageous shipping fee from Mancini Racing

-
There's a thread here from 2014 talking about the same issue with the same company. If they didn't change their practices in 11 years they probably ain't going to now.
Mancini Racing Shipping Charges?
You should be notified of the shipping costs before you order anything, but evidently enough people don't care.

Good catch. Thanks. I didn't even bother to look - I was too focused on getting this out there.

Torsion bars.
Mancini no free shipping.
PST free shipping.
PST was lowest total for me.

Went to Carlisle, to Mancini tent, asked for a-body bars, guy grabs them, says $400.
Not $399, $400.

I replied, your website shows $379, I have my cart saved on my phone.
He says no, we both pull out our phones, and we both show $399.

I say, no way, it was not $399.
He says, paying with cash, I said yes, he says how about $375?

$375 is lowest at that moment plus no bs with shipping issues, I say ok.
I give him $400, waiting for change.

Another customer comes up, says, how about them torsion bars?
Mancini man says, sure, $400.

Customer says, you told me $375 earlier?
Did you get your change?

As much as it sounds like you got shafted, the shipping is NOT comparable to getting an online quote. The whole process of buying a box, buying the soft padding that goes inside (unless it's shredded paper), getting the labels printed, potentially driving to the post office (unless it's collected from their place of business), this all takes time and money.
Whenever I've sold anything personally the shipping has been the most time consuming part of the whole exercise. It's a pain in the balls.

How do their prices compare when you look at item cost and shipping together? Are they $38 more?

Anyone who advertises "Free Shipping" or low shipping prices usually has buried the cost in the item itself.

There's nothing for free, and everyone has to make money, that's why they are in business.

I'm saying that the handling fee is part of paying an employee minimum wage to box up your parts.

Got 'cha. Thanks for clarifying. I thought you might be going the other direction. We have two mammoth Amazon fulfilment centers here and their shipping charges aren't near the same as Mancini's despite the higher minimum wage Amazon has to pay their workers. I think the Mancini thing is simply a money grab. Once the order is placed, the buyer has committed to spending that money on the parts. The bloated shipping charge is 'the cost of doing business' with Mancini - what's a guy going to do - send the order back? Refuse the shipment? Again, the company has you over a barrel if they are the only game in town with the part you need. It's just a reminder for me to work harder finding alternative sources for the same parts. Sorry Mancini.

Handling fees should be included in the price/margins. Nobody charges a separate handling fee these day. It reminds me of the old TV ads for crap you could buy back in the '80s. I expect some small time retailers don't have the volume or couldn't care less about getting a better shipping deal for their customers. The fact that they have no online shipping calculator is archaic. Almost every has one. I have certainly decided to not buy from some due to the high shipping costs. Its a big part of the buying decision.

Your wrong parts story reminded me of my Jegs experience. My machinist said the pin bushings in my rods were shot. We found some on the Jegs site that could be honed a bit and would work for a reasonable price ($158). I had them shipped directly to the machine shop. Got a call from the shop owner saying the blister package label indicated the OD was 1.142 - or way too small for what we need. He took one out and measured it just to be sure. It was right on 1.142. The Jegs site and their order form said they were 1.172 OD. Somewhere, sometime, someone at Jegs entered the wrong OD size. I called Jegs & got the email of the gentleman I was working with. I sent him attachments of the bushing company data sheet, a picture of the bushing package label and the Jegs order form. Two days later I got a return label and sent the too small bushings back. Five days later I got a notice they had received the bushings and were refunding those costs. But now I'm getting deluged with emails & texts from Jegs. UNSUBSCRIBE, UNSUBCRIBE, UNSUBCRIBE!!!

I am not a fan of Jegs. They caused me no end of hassle about a eight (stupid tablet and autocorrect) years back on something I don't even remember what the part was. Their poor customer service lost me.

I am not loyal to a company and their logo. I am loyal to a good product at a fair price and good treatment.

I like Jegs because they have good deals sometimes and can get crap into Canada cheaply. Because of this tracking is a black hole so you can't be in a hurry.

I've never liked Jegs. On the phone, they are like cardboard. Apathetic and uncaring. That's just one mire reason I love Summit. They talk to you like you're a human. They shoot the breeze, joke around, the whole bit to make you feel like they care, because I think they do. That goes a long way with me.

I guess you have never talked to Classic Industries

I hear what your saying but that isn't the case for many of us. I just sold 3 high dollar distributors for a song and only charged the minimum amount for shipping. I'm saying when there are companies like Pirateship.com out there, there is no reason to double up shipping costs. Mancini gets their parts at a wholesaler's cost and sells them at retail. The difference should more than cover their warehouse, employee salaries, shipping supplies and such that they don't have to gouge you on a blind shipping charge. If you call Summit, they will tell you what that part's shipping weight is. They know your order, what size box it is going in and they have contracts with these different shipping companies (Pirateship only does UPS or the postal service). My argument is, paying shipping is expected, paying double for the same service I can show only costs half what I'm being charged is a poor business practice. The argument isn't with the salesman or the order packer - it's with the fat cat CEOs and other 'non-essential' workers.

Understood, but what is the total order cost between Mancini and Summit as a comparison?
Mancini: Parts plus $38 postage
Summit: Parts incl Free Shipping

Only then can you know if you've been ripped off.

I got the same feeling. The fellow I spoke with was almost accusatory that I had done something wrong. Sorry buddy, this one was on you and I had the paperwork to prove it. Now swallow your sanctimonious attitude and get me my refund...

It's a handling fee. I've had things take over an hour to gather everything, pack, label, etc. Mancini employees don't work for free. Now some places use the shipping dept as a profit center, although slim.
Jims auto was horrible for this type of excessive shipping charges and broomhilda answering the phones... OOOF Year one, classic are another pair that run up the charges.

Same as the part is being sold, if it isn't sold by X date - NO SHIPPING, it's going in the trash, not taking it with me. The number of I'll pay for shipping since you are tossing it away. I don't think so. :)

One of my favorites of all time was a customer that wanted something from me. Another vendor had a similar item. MY price was $20 less with about $12 shipping, they bought from the other person because they got free shipping. Paid $8 more for an inferior item. Hey, shipping was free and the swung the scales. Math is hard.

Summit order was more than $109 - their threshold for free shipping. Just for giggles, the shipment came in two 50 lb boxes - so it wasn't light and it wasn't cheap to ship.
