Power stroke impulse is spread over time therefore reducing shearing forces on the crank.
This allows for a smoother ride, less vibration and reduced wear.

Remember the jingle from the old Mazda commercials?
"Piston engine goes 'boing, boing, boing', but the Mazda goes 'Hummmmm' "!
Now I'm REALLY dating myself.
CHP officer I knew during my time in the desert long ago bought a Mazda sedan with the rotary, which were rather new to the scene at the time. His wife was driving it on I 15 and couldn't figure out why she was passing everyone else like they were standing still at 60 mph. He determined that she had mistaken the tach for the speedo and really had that quiet little rotary hmmmmming at 6K RPM.
