Thank you all for your replies and photos. They've been been very helpful. I've always just assumed that there was more contact between the rims and the drums, but that is clearly not the case on these aftermarket rims that I have.

Beautiful car! I just bought a set of these rims from Summit Racing for my 68 Barracuda. They're real nice, but the strange thing that I can't figure out is that the center of the rims don't sit up against the drums. They sit out about 1/4". The areas around the lug nuts don't sit up against...
