    Nicks Garage 383 build

I bought it with another knocking 440HP (6pk rods) in it, so I never experienced the 383.

    Swapped in a 1968 440 from a 300 4dr into the originally 383-powered '66 Coronet.

    Nicks Garage 383 build

Been there as a 17yr old kid with a '66 Coronet 500 with a swapped & modded (by me) '68 440. It took great restraint to survive that, and once I was 18-19 and drinking beer, I really don't know how I made it!!

YES!! THIS^!! You have to basically DOUBLE the CFM when switching from a properly built/tuned engine with a dialed open plenum single plane to a 2x4 tunnel ram. 340=2x750, 440=2x850, etc. We ran 2x660s on our FED rail 383 (Offy TALL tunnel ram) and I felt it needed 2x750s, we went to a 471"...

Speaking of manifolds, did anyone else notice Nick had a short, maybe 1/2" spacer on top of a divided-plenum intake? I've never liked that transition from open to flange irregularities/shelves. On a 4-hole intake, you can run an inverted tapered 4-hole spacer with the holes DOWN to smooth the...

OH and I like the "B" motors just fine. We ran 8.65 in the 1/4 in the heat with our old nostalgia rail with an all-iron 383 back in the 2000s, TRW dome pistons, 915 440 heads with Pontiac 2.11x1.78" 11/32" stem valves, Lunati solid FT cam, 265/271*@.050", .576/.562" lift, Crane gold roller...

Nick says the pistons are .050" in the hole, replacement forged pistons (TRWs?). He milled the heads .020" and used shim head gaskets to bump the compression some, but zero decking (or even positive deck piston crown, like some '69HPs are) would have really helped. I didn't watch it thoroughly...

300 HP out of a 318, is it possible with bolt ons?

Bolt-on's I don't know. Starting clean-sheet but on a budget, get '85-2002 replacement pistons (more compression height than the older pistons, even the 4-eyebrow early style) and start with #302 casting (heart shaped chambers) heads, modified for 360 valves (1.88x1.60"), with chambers...

    Camshaft id please...

The MoPar PurpleShaft solids are .028/.032" pretty much across the board, I always set mine at .024/.026" HOT and had no problems. Much less noise, and I ran them with 1.6 rockers as well. Play around with it, but unless you are lacking bottom end, tighter will be better up to a point.

How strong is an a-body 8.25 and can you make it stronger?

Yes I used it to replace a 7.25" in my '71 Demon (318 car), and it held up to hundreds of runs with a 400hp 360 (mid/low 12s) and a 525hp 416 (low 11s) but I was footbraking with 3.91 gears and a Sure Grip. I haven't inspected it but it worked fine when I ladder bar'ed the car with an 8.75" and...
