    My doomed 408 build

Well the driving has gone well, I have put a few more miles on it, changed the oil and cut open the filter. It is clean as new no glitter at all. I realy need to work on stiffing the chassis up. I definitely have door gap growing on the drivers side and the passenger is shrinking. I also have...

    My doomed 408 build

I didnt want to do a cage or roll bar set up, but i think that may be my only real way to get it as stiff as I need.

    My doomed 408 build

I spent the weekend, tidying things up in the engine bay. I have also done around another 150 miles on the car. I cruised around town and then did a small stint out into the open country. It was a fun and glorious day on the road, in an old squeaky rattle box MOPAR... To note: I have a...

She is alive!!!!! It has to be a she for how temperamental she is. Saturday we installed the engine with no dramas. Sunday we started her up. She fired up on the first crank, following the break in procedure from Hughes to the letter. We shut it down installed the middle springs, Changed the...

    My doomed 408 build

IT's all good. I have gotten a lot of good advise, some good information, and better yet a way to get my frustration out. I just know it will all be worth it when my Dad is at the drag strip getting in the car to run.... with his big grin.

    My doomed 408 build

I used the supplied from Hughes cam lube. I'd have to go to my Dad's place and look at the packaging. I used Amsoil assembly lube on everything that could use it. Pistons were dipped in 20-50wt VR1 oil. Bearings were put together with the VR1 as well. Every part was cleaner then a dinner plate...

    My doomed 408 build

To me the money was worth it. I have helped other people assemble engines, but I have not done a complete job by myself. for how many thousands of dollars I have spent on this engine, $300 more bucks is not going to make a dent in the total cost. To me its insurance so I don't over look any...

    My doomed 408 build

No, having the guy come from the machine shop has nothing to do with the warranty from Hughes, but to me it was worth the $300.00 bucks for him to change out the springs on the heads, measure and build the push-rods, and the piece of mind that some one with more experience working on engines has...

    My doomed 408 build

We did not wash the block with soap and water. I also did not remove any freeze plugs. My Dad and I felt that with brake cleaner and compressed air we would get any debris loose, and then a light film of WD-40 to keep it from flash rusting. We used engine assembly lube on all bearing faces...

    My doomed 408 build

My Dad and I worked on it all weekend. We tore the engine down to the short block, removed the cam, lifter rollers and the cam lobes were damaged. #8 exhaust lifter roller had locked up and ate the lobe. Obviously the wrong weight of valve spring, and the lifters were bouncing off of the...

    My doomed 408 build

Finished the tear down and rebuild with my dad yesterday. I have a machine shop guy coming over tonight to measure the push rods, and double check our work. It actually was easier then expected. While it was apart I almost sent the heads to Shady Dell.... I still might.

PRH, you have been very helpful I appreciate your knowledge. After re-reading everything, I would like to state the car is 20% street, 80% strip. I originally bought the car so I could use my father in laws wrecked one to rebuild his car. Then My father in law said he wouldn't drive a purple...
