Big Valve X Heads on Low Comp 72 340

You would be limited to the cam size for either head. I think stock X or J heads flow stalls out around .490 valve lift. Those TV guys can get 400 hp with a cam, headers and carb swap, but you and i can't.

Big Valve X Heads on Low Comp 72 340

Stock 1.88 valve j heads will support 400 hp. You will need to do a lot to the motor to gain anything with x heads. The J heads may have better acceleration on the street to well past highway speeds, but you will win all the parking lot races with the x heads.

    318 cam suggestions

Now we're getting somewhere. You need low end torque that will pull hard from idle and rev nicely to about 5200. without machining for much higher compression, like Toolmanmike, i'd look towards stock 340 cam but with a little less duration (204 / 214?) and 3.23 geared rear.

Back to the original post. What is the purpose of your build? cruising, quarter mile or fun street? It makes a big difference.

    Drum to Disc MC Issues

Dadsbee is correct. The caliper pistons only move a few thousands of an inch. The extra volume is for pad wear and you'll probably never need it unless it's a daily driven for a few years. The boot is a nice touch, i'd use it. I have drilled and tapped a master for that very reason. It only takes...

    How much HP...again

I watched a lot of 383 Superbees and Roadrunners go down the strip in the 60's. The 323 gear cars were all 15 sec. but with slicks, headers and 4.10's there was one that ran around 13.9. With the 440 heads the 383 compression was in the 8's and they were lazy without gears. You guys gotta' stop...

    650 or 750 Edelbrock on 340

Late to this party... responses all seem to be based on max HP. For 1/4 mile the big carb but for a strictly street driven car, the 650 could be the ticket.

How to get 400 hp out of 1971 340 .30 over

These guys a paid by the manufacturers whose parts they advertise. Here's Comp's own honest dyno of a 9.0:1 350 with good Dart heads, the XE268 and headers. Have a look!

1” or 2” lift Espo springs

I agree..higher in the rear is preferred by a lot of guys. I'm just not one of them.

Poll for Minimum Torque for a performance street Machine?

I'd want max torque from 800 to 3000 rpm... above that the rpm should take off!

1” or 2” lift Espo springs

i don't get the high rear look? It will ruin your handling. And then if you raise the front it will remove caster making matters worse. Listen Johnny Dart and go stock, it will look and handle better.
