I used to take the spring off the teflon when used on exhaust. With viton i run them as they are. I do a lot of cylinder head work in Ct. I retrofit them into any application i can, antique, racing and street stuff. I usually leave about .200 clearace between bottom of retainer and top of...

i run vitons on everything i can now-a-days. I feel they do a better job at oil control whereas teflon can be too good at stopping the oil. I used to remove the spring on the exhaust side.
