    Reading spark plugs

Well, I guess the two older gentlemen that told me this are backwards. One night in the pits at Ascot Park in the 80's C.R. Axtell and Ed Iskyderian explained many things to me including how to read a sparkplug. There are some things in life that you never forget especially when talking to some...

    Reading spark plugs

The black housing on the autolite prevents you from checking the mixture. The porcelain is used to check heat range. Using the porcelain to check mixture is a dumb old mechanics tale! The back pages of every spark plug manufactures master catalog will detail this information out for you. Of...

    mufflers or no mufflers??

OK here is the scoop. My husband has run extensive dyno tests on his dyno using mufflers on his superstocker, my street car, and almost every engine he dynoes. How much the muffler flows means nothing. If you want flow, then take the entire exhaust system off. It is the speed at which the...

    Crankcase Ventilation

Fishy beat me to it. The compression blows the air fuel mixture and the oil past the rings into the crankcase and out the breather tubes. Wow I just had a blonde moment. I drive a fish!

68-70 Hi po manifolds vs quality headers

The dragstrip has many variables involved. That guy also changed many things and it is not fair to blame the exhaust only. Just to start, his cam is probably too big. I got my information from watching my husband run engines on the dyno at his machine shop. I will say it again. The exhaust...

68-70 Hi po manifolds vs quality headers

Headers don't really come into play until you reach 5000rpm. The horsepower gained is slight unless you have too big of a cam to start with.

    Still not There!

So your jetting is OK. Some spark plugs are impossible to check jetting ie nonrace version Autolites. I would try bigger squirters and see if that helps.

    Crankcase Ventilation

You have a ring problem! I have never used any crankcase evac on my drag car and have never had any problems. At WOT the most vacuum you will ever pull will be 1.5" with your four barrel so a pcv valve won't help much. An exhaust pan-evac will help a little more and a vacuum pump will do the...
