    Old Race 340 Teardown

Yes, my X-block has Milodon caps with splayed outer bolts. You gotta remember that this engine was built at about the same time as the X-block showed up in the catalog, pretty early.

    Old Race 340 Teardown

Progress being made. I primed the oil system and found that I had not seated the oil filter plate properly. I pumped out almost a quart while I was watching for the rocker shafts to prime. Fortunately, I had a catch pan that kept most of the mess off the floor. I had a sealing gasket under the...

By seat to seat are you talking total duration? 320/324.

Thanks for posting the info - I think it's the lobe center that is 108, not the ICL.

    Old Race 340 Teardown

I have got to the point of checking my cam's intake centerline (ICL) before I put the heads on. My cam is a Crane R-280/450-2S-8 with 108 deg lobe separation. I installed the cam gearset aligning the marks as it was prior to disassembly. I don't have a cam card but the specs I can find on-line...

    Old Race 340 Teardown

I've had an interesting time starting to put this engine back together. With all my measurements made and inspections done I discovered that I could not find a source for rod bearings with the dowel pin hole that these rods require. So I had to rig up a way to cut the holes myself. I bought a...

Does Anybody Remember this Pro Gas Duster?

Hey Dallas! I just saw this update. I hope you're listening. Sure fantastic news to hear that you're working on that car. I am currently working on the LA engine out of your car. My Brother Bob had it in his garage. It's a 355 CID X-block with W-2 heads. Also have the headers and engine front...

    Old Race 340 Teardown

OK, yes, that's exactly the kind of feedback I need thanks so much everyone. I also went hunting into my old books and came up with this chart that shows several types of seals and o-rings in the distributor base. Since I'm depending on the added "shim" height of the steel seal that I have I...

    Old Race 340 Teardown

OK, where the distributor/oil pump drive intermediate shaft has the gear that's driven off the cam. That shaft and gear ride in a bushing in the back of the block. Now, when the distributor is placed over the top of the intermediate shaft it has a drive tang that engages the intermediate shaft...

    Old Race 340 Teardown

I'm finally in a position to re-assemble this engine and run it on a stand. I went to test-fit the intermediate shaft and distributor and check the end-play. The distributor does not have a groove for an o-ring but it does have a gasket/shim under the mating flange. The gasket/shim looks like...

    Yet more bearing questions?

Hi - I am circling back to my engine as I gather parts to re-assemble it. I can't find the rod bearings, Clevite CN-481HDXN because they don't seem to be available with the dowel hole. Is that something that any machine shop can do or are there specialists? I am in the Seattle-Tacoma area if...

    Yet more bearing questions?

Yes, 340 X-block with 3.46 crank. More background on this thread Old Race 340 Teardown Hmmm, hadn't noticed, good eye. I assumed they were uppers because of the oil holes. Maybe there was a design change since 1980?
