    Head Bolt Torque

Thanks. I think I was more concerned about "crushing" the gasket beyond what is normal. I feel better now.

    Head Bolt Torque

I made a rookie mistake and over-torqued my head bolts to 80 ft-lbs. I was reading through Dutra's book and on page 107 it says 80 ft-lbs. (Other spec sheets say 65). Do I have anything to worry about? The engine is NOT installed yet so should I just start over again with a new gasket and...

Crank Shaft Conversion Pilot Reduction Sleeve

I'm just posting this for future reference just incase someone might be looking for the crankshaft reduction collar for those 1967 or later crankshafts trying to mate with an earlier, smaller torque converter support counterbore. The size of the crankshaft bore increased in 1967 so the crank...

    Timing Mark Dilemma

You are correct. They are all the way DOWN, which means the valves are closed. What you are actually looking at in the picture are two rod pins stacked on top of each other so I can get the tops up out of the block high enough to lay a straight edge across the top. Turns out the piston pins...

    Timing Mark Dilemma

I was missing this VERY good point. When I rotated 180 for #1 TDC, (with the dots opposite) now both the intake and exhaust lifters are dead even (open). (I have stacked the lifters so I can lay the straight edge).

    Timing Mark Dilemma

Do you mean the timing mark 180 degrees off?

    Timing Mark Dilemma

Okay. I'm going with crank key pointing straight up and the #1 cylinder at TDC and leaving the marks lined up like in the second picture. On to degreeing the camshaft. Thanks again for the help....and stand by. I'm sure I'll be back!

    Timing Mark Dilemma

I got it out of Doug Dutra's manual. I think I'm starting to feel better already.

    Timing Mark Dilemma

Notice in this photo I can get the marks to line up but the cam is cocked to the right and NOT straight up or square to the block.

    Timing Mark Dilemma

Very good point. Thanks for the photo.

    Timing Mark Dilemma

Rusty, Thanks for replying. You've been a big help so far with my build. This is a 225 and the pistons are 0.1585 below the deck. I know that's a little low for some people but I believe it's within spec. I'm using the original rods so that's how the original engine ran. Believe me when I say...

    Timing Mark Dilemma

On my engine reassembly, I'm stuck with the timing. The cam pin (and cam gear slot) is pointing straight up and is exactly square with the top of the block. The crank key is pointing exactly straight up. The number one (and number six) piston is exactly TDC including any adjustments for dwell...

    HELP with Piston Rings

I found one! A very old NAPA had one on the shelf not even listed in inventory. I got lucky. Thanks for checking.

    HELP with Piston Rings

I broke a #2 piston ring and I cant find anyone that sells a "singe cylinder" package of rings. Summit can get me a pack in January! I'm looking for a 5/64th #2 ring 3.404 bore (.40 over). Any ideas? I already searched the classifieds?

    Timing Chain Tolerance

That's what I was thinking. It's an easy replacement so I'm just going to buy a new one with new sprockets Thanks for the opinion.
