Mine stays on. But, if I turn it a little too far, clockwise, it loosens again

I'm a newbie, so be gentle. Just purchased a '71 Scamp. Don't know whether it was early or late year. First, how can I determine that? Cap on it doesn't fit perfectly. So, I'm looking for an original gas cap for it.
