    Solutions for too much compression

So I am at a point right now where I am using only machanical advance. Initial at 14 and total at 24. It’s all in by 2500 or so. If I advance it more I get some pinging. Does it make sense to put in stiffer springs and delay the advance till a higher rpm? Then I may be able to run more initial...

    Solutions for too much compression

I will borrow another timing light to verify mine is ok. A question about reading plugs. Do they need to be cleaned off after you make an adjustment to give you a good read on your new setting? Or does their appearance just change right away after you two me the motor differently. These plugs...

    Solutions for too much compression

I just set timing for 14 initial 23 total, No vacuum advance at a And put in some stiffer springs ... I think I’m finally going in the right direction. It feels like it has more power when it starts to approach 4000. I tried advancing more but I got pinging again. It now feels more healthy with...

    Solutions for too much compression

Cool. I just received my FBO advance limiter plate and I’ll be messing with that tomorrow.

I like it. I guess you are saying that the mixture is too lean and that can contribute to pinging? What is the best way to see what the carb is doing? Install an 02 sensor and gauge, or do I need dyno time ?

    Solutions for too much compression

Results are in... Plugged the vacuum advance. Total at 3000 is 34 At 2000 is 28 At 1500 is 20 Idle at 800 rpm is 10 degrees Pinging it’s head off under power, even at 2000 rpm. Power feels pretty good until I have to let off because of the pinging. I’m using a regular timing light, not a...

    Solutions for too much compression

Yes. There was a slight overlap when both valves were overlapping, so we eyeballed the middle point. It seemed dead on.

    Solutions for too much compression

Thanks. Yes TDC has been confirmed with a piston stop. And I realize my rocker watching method is not perfect, but I figured it is telling me that the cam is pretty darn close. And I didn’t have to tear anything apart yet. Really, the motor doesn’t run bad, I’m just trying to make it run great.

    Solutions for too much compression

So I took off the drivers side valve cover and turned to motor over by hand. Had a friend watch the rockers and as I passed 360 degrees past tdc ( where the exhaust is just closing and the intake is just opening )I had him tell me where exactly the exhaust fully closed and the intake just...

    Solutions for too much compression

Ok guys. I am loving all the help coming in, but I think I need to reiterate some things I know, and also things I don’t know, and why What I know. Short block is a la 360, bought directly from Mopar 17 years ago with flat top pistons and advertised to have around a 9.5 to 1 cr. Exact cam...

    Solutions for too much compression

Mopar Performance distributor with vacuum advance and orange ignition box. Mechanical advance adds about 25 degrees right now, but I am putting in one I just checked because you mentioned cam timing. It looks to be correct.
